This contribution considers the use of the UWB technique for railway transportation. Potentially, UWB can simultaneously offer ground to train communication, tram positioning and obstacle detection in front of the trains, using basically the same radio approach. The UWB technique can be used for ground to train spot communication and positioning. It can also be used to support inside the train communication and positioning. Moreover, UWB radio associated to Time Reversal (TR-UWB) can provide some interesting advanced railway functions. Focusing the radiofrequency energy in certain areas of interest in order to provide communication in specific areas or to support passenger and staff services is one of these advantages. This combination provides a challenging, economically significant, as well as technically effective alternative solution to existing technologies used in railway. Moreover, the TR-UWB technique delivers improved performance over the UWB alone positioning approach that could benefit the development of some railway positioning applications.
