Expected to carry its first passengers next month in China, the Zefiro380 is the fastest member of Bombardier Transportation's Zefiro family. Developed specifically to run at a maximum speed of 380 km/h in commercial service, it has already won several design awards. The eight-car set is formed of four powered and four trailer cars configured as two 'train base units' (TBU). Each TBU consists of one powered car with cab (Me), a trailer car with transformer (Tp), a motor car without cab (M) and a further trailer car (T). As the TBUs are not equipped identically, the train can only operate in the following configuration: Mcla-1 + Tp2-2 + M2v-3 + Td2-4 + T2-5 + M2vs-6 + Tp2-7 + Mc2a-8. The design concept also permits 12-car or 16-car sets to be formed. The bodyshell consists of extruded aluminium profiles welded to form a shape that takes maximum advantage of the construction gauge. The profiles were developed in close co-operation with local suppliers. Documentary evidence was required to ensure compliance with an eigenfrequency of at least 10 Hz in a fully equipped car body. The brake control system was designed to reduce weight and has no continuous brake pipe. The arrangement includes a safety brake loop, also known as an 'urgency brake loop', which is activated by an independent emergency brake monitoring system. In normal conditions the electrodynamic brake has priority for both service and emergency braking, with the pneumatic brakes on the trailer and motor cars of each TBU being blended in automatically as necessary. All traction equipment is located under the floor or on the roof to leave the interior space free for passenger accommodation. In each TBU the main transformer is located under the floor in the centre of the Tp car, supplying power to the two adjacent motor cars. The Tp cars also carry the Faiveley pantographs. The two transformer cars are linked by a high voltage cable along the roof, fed by whichever pantograph is raised at the time. The location of the main circuit breakers makes it possible to isolate sections of the high voltage line in the event of a malfunction. This means it is possible to deactivate the traction power supply of a faulty TBU while that of the other TBU remains operational. If a malfunction in the high voltage line happens to be located between the circuit breakers, both TBUs would remain operational. The high voltage AC equipment is distributed over the six intermediate cars of the trainset and is symmetrical in each of the two TBUs. The primary current return is completely separated from the train's protective earthing and is routed to the earthing brushing of the wheelsets through separate wires. A cooling block next to each transformer ensures that its temperature remains below specified parameters.
