In this paper, different predictors developed for the determination of the fatigue life of rubber components have been discussed and applied to the study of belt separation of pneumatic tires. This kind of failure is mostly found in truck tires, in which the high mileage allows for the propagation of cracks in the rubber material between belts, near their edges. The considered predictors have been developed by using continuum mechanics or fracture mechanics approaches. Out of the continuum mechanics approaches, three classical (maximum stretch, maximum stress and strain energy density) and one new (configurational) stress predictor have been considered. As fracture mechanics approach, the predictor based on material forces has been considered. This last predictor is very closely related to the so called J-integral. A steady state rolling tire model has been used for the computation of the considered predictors. As a result, the predictors have identified the same location in the tire section as the most likely ones for propagation of fatigue cracks. The identified location is in agreement with a durability test performed on the tire. The maximum stretch, the maximum stress and the configurational stress predictor have shown to be able also to identify the direction of the crack propagation. The configurational stress predictor has some peculiar properties. This predictor is computed by considering damage accumulation over the cycle. It is able to distinguish between different load cycles with the same maximum load. However, for its computation, a quite fine time discretization of the cycle is needed.
