Since their introduction radial tyres have progressively replaced bias geometry in many applications because of their higher resistance to wear and lower rolling resistance. Radial tyres however exhibit a higher deflection under load which can lead to unsustainable stresses in some regions of the structure causing crack growth and thus a reduced lifetime. This paper aims to determine the tearing energy in critical parts of a radial tyre (bead and shoulder region) using a finite element model. This when combined with typical crack growth methods allows a prediction of fatigue failure to be made. The fatigue behaviour of several real tyre compounds has been measured using a conventional pure shear crack growth specimen as well as the interfacial properties using a fatigue peeling test. This paper introduces the basis of a Finite Element Analysis model currently being developed in order to evaluate the tearing energy in critical regions of a tyre as a first step towards prediction of the lifetime of the tyre.
