This work aims to study energy flow in electric vehicle (EV). 4-Wheel hub motor EV with range extender (RE) is being modelled and developed under Matlab/Simulink environment. This model mainly consists of Li-ion battery pack, range extender, vehicle electrical system and vehicle body. A number of standard driving cycles are used to investigate a response and an energy demand of this EV architecture. From the simulation, Pre-filter helps to reduce rate of change of reference speed which helps vehicle to perform smoother and require fewer power during speed transition. Power demand of EV depends mainly on driving style and response time of controller when the same vehicle model with equal load is tested. Faster driving leads motor not to meet better efficiency only, but to perform better regenerative braking also. Response time of controller must meet optimum value which is fast enough to compensate disturbances properly, but not too high to cause overshoot during speed shifting. Auxiliary energy storage element, for instance, super capacitor, is badly recommended to temporarily store regenerative current from traction motors to protect prime source from any damage and to start RE. In this work, RE is controlled by state machine which only observe SoC to consider operation state. However, this factor might not enough in practice to response to all coincidences during driving.
