An investigation on the efficiency differences between diesel and gasoline engines was performed. The main differences were found in dilution, increased expansion and reduced wall heat losses. Potential improvement technologies following these differences such as Miller cycle, articulated cranktrains, variable compression ratio and cooled EGR were investigated. It was shown that even with a combination of relatively simple measures - assuring the combustion system can tolerate the revised combustion process - a significant improvement in BSFC of > 10% compared to the state of the art can be achieved w/o leaving Lambda = 1 operation.
