As fuel prices rise, improvement of vehicle effectiveness becomes an even more essential necessity. Hybridisation significantly improves the energy efficiency of vehicles by allowing the engine to run in a better efficiency zone, and also by implementing regenerative braking systems. These improvements represent a considerable step forward through energy efficiency, but limitation comes from the engine whose maximum efficiency remains under 40%. Analysis of heat loss shows that exhaust heat energy recovery is a real opportunity for improving fuel consumption. IFPEN has identified exhaust heat recovery by means of a Rankine cycle as a promising solution to reduce fuel consumption. In parallel to its participation to other projects (Rankine for a truck, Rankine for a regional train), IFPEN has operated a research and development project based on a solution of a Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system to reduce the overall fuel consumption of a gasoline engine on a light duty vehicle. Another challenge of the project is to propose a vehicle-compatible WHR system. A detailed thermodynamic analysis was conducted which led to the selection for the Rankine cycle of water as working fluid coupled to a piston type expander technology. Due to the use of water, particular attention has been paid to steam super-heating management. CAD activities led to bench and vehicle-compatible integration of the system. Then based on the system specifications, a prototype of WHR system was designed and assembled for test bed experimentations. The performance of the system was thereby evaluated on a 1.4 liter gasoline engine. Rankine power output of about 1 kW has been experimentally measured during the testing campaign.
