This year Ferrari revealed a new special hybrid series car that, among a number of state-of-the-art technologies, employs a high performance Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which on Ferrari Gran Turismo (GT) cars is known as HY-KERS. This paper focusses on the thermal management of the high voltage battery which is coupled to the air conditioning system in an indirect cooling lay-out to benefit from the existing system to optimize weight and space. The thermal requirements and duty cycles were based on vehicle dynamic simulations on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), EPA City and the specific Ferrari Fiorano track cycles, as well as the battery capacity, State of Charge (SOC) limits and cells temperature. On top of the battery requirements, the cabin comfort demands were also taken into consideration and, unlike the more common hybrid cars in production, the battery cooling requirement is close to 50% of the total cooling capacity installed. To cope with those highly demanding thermal requirements that in many situations have contrasting requirements whilst sharing the same refrigerant and Air Conditioning (A/C) components, specific control algorithms were developed for edrive, cool-down transients and sporty driving to ensure that cockpit temperatures are always maintained at the desired comfort level.
