A low cost monitoring system was designed to provide continuous real-time data on the presence of AC/DC underwater electric currents. The system consists of a PVC support structure with four pseudoreference electrodes, digital compass and mini PC with high-gain ADC board. The electrodes are arranged as an orthogonal triad: one central electrode is used as a common ground and three electrodes are offset by 1 m in three orthogonal directions. The compass data is used to compensate for any rotations due to the water movements (tidal and wind generated currents, etc.). The PC is remotely operated through a wireless internet connection. A field testing was carried out at Portsmouth Harbor (USA) to record data for a seawater corrosion study of copper alloys. The effect of the observed stray currents on the accuracy of corrosion data was analyzed and determined to be low for DC and negligible for AC currents.
