It is a complex task for the automotive industry to connect mobile devices and automotive electronics. In the paper, Ford's approach, called AppLink, is presented. The AppLink approach marries the two worlds and is based on flexibility, safety and openness. Communication between the applications running on the user's mobile device and the In-Vehicle Infotainment System (IVI) is based on Application Programming Interface (API) , known to both parties. With this API, the mobile application can trigger the system to show information on the vehicle display, play audio through the vehicle's sound system, request input from the driver via voice commands or buttons and get information about the vehicle. Because existing applications only have to be modified, never ported or branched, developers can quickly adapt this technology and enable the safe usage of their application in the car. Additionally, to support developers, AppLink includes a library for iOS and Android that wraps the API in easily accessible functions on the mobile applications side. The strict separation of the communication layer and the HMI in the IVI system, is what makes AppLink flexible for the car manufacturer. The application provides the string to show on the vehicle screen, but the IVI system decides how to show it. This enables the next step for AppLink technology, going open source. The GENIVI alliance hosts the SmartDeviceLink project that has been initiated by Ford. GENIVI is a non-profit industry alliance promoting the use of open source technology in the automotive sector. The source code of AppLink has been contributed to the project and can be used by everyone, including other OEMs, to implement the same API on different IVI Systems. The HMI stays in control by the various OEMs but application developers only have to deal with one API.
