The extended quasi steady state (EQS) lap time simulation offers a possibility to integrate transient effects like tire temperature in the quasi steady state simulation approach while maintaining a high robustness and precision. The numerical effort remains small compared to other optimization methods like optimal control. Optimal control lap time simulation methods also offer a possibility to investigate the effect of transient models on the lap time. These methods calculate the control strategy for an arbitrary cost function. The EQS simulation relies on the formulated bang bang optimal control strategy. Hence the vehicle is always driven at the maximum acceleration potential at every calculation step, while the optimal control solution has a more global view by evaluating the cost function. For example, if a tire has the need to be used over the normal optimal area to be warmed up, this is identified by the optimal control approach, while the EQS simulation still uses the maximum tire potential. The optimal control solution on the other hand is numerically more complex to achieve than the EQS solution and tends to be caught in local optima. Therefore optimal control is likely to find a different solution for varying start conditions which leads to an increased tolerance. As long as the defined control strategy is applicable, the EQS lap time simulation is able to produce sensible lap time results. In summary the extended steady state lap time simulation provides an accurate lap time calculation considering the transient and time-variant vehicle states like the tire temperature.
