In a challenging market, each feature of a car is tremendously important as it can play an important role in the choice of the purchase of a new car, in particular the level of noise of a vehicle travelling on road can affect the subjective evaluation of the product as well as its handling performances fuel consumption etc. For this reason it is crucial to perfectly find a trade-off between those conflicting performances saving weight. The presented studies show that the tradeoff between the NVH performance and the weight can be achieved thanks to a mix of well known technologies (FLDT optimization), new technologies (tailored rolled blanks and fiber reinforced plastic) and a joint approach of all the available tools in order to change the design paradigm towards enlightened design. In particular the glass fiber polyamide with epoxy foam bulkheads have confirmed the improvement in terms of dynamic stiffnesses of the rear suspension link attachment points saving weight (the prototype car has a virtually evaluated weight saving of 3.1 kg) and increasing the performance. The new material strategy employing GFRP and epoxy foam has therefore allowed to find a new tradeoff between performances and weight pushing forward some of the constraints that have originated the baseline solution and underlining, once more, that a joint approach of new selected materials and optimization task can enhance the performances and get closer to the lightweight design.
