The introduction of eCall and EDRs means a paradigm shift for the automotive industry. These technologies will accelerate the developments that started off with autonomic and purely mechanical cars and will have its end in highly digitaiized, vastly interconnected and fully automated vehicles. With respect to eCall and EDRs, we have shown that the storage, processing and communication of sensitive information on the one hand, as well as the introduction of new technology and communication links on the other, in fact introduce many new attack points. We have listed attacks that already occurred, identified groups of potential attackers, and analyzed potential vulnerabilities in detail. The elaboration clearly shows that attacks on the security of such IT-systems and as well as eavesdropping and manipulation of sensitive data constitute a real problem. Victims of such attacks can be manifold and prevention as well as detection of these potential attacks is only possible with proper protection measures in place. Based on the four categories organizational & process security, system design & logical security, software security, and hardware security, we have proposed a helpful engineering toolset to implement adequate security solutions. Therefore, a proper security engineering process and security experts should be involved throughout the complete product lifecycle.
