Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) is employed to analyse the common mode (CM) current signal from the ignition system of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). The CM current signal is decomposed into 16 subbands using WPT in the frequency domain. The integrated energy parameter of Wavelet Packet Coefficient (WPC) is extracted to describe electromagnetic interference (EMI) characteristics. The location of the main frequency zone for energy distribution was confirmed as the frequency band (62.5-70.3 MHz). When WPT is used, the obtained CM current spectrum has the same energy features compared with the spectrum derived using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The results accurately indicate that when WPT is used, the extracted integration energy parameter of WPC can also represent EMI characteristics.
