The Q10 dummy was developed in the European project EPOCH and is the oldest child dummy in the Q dummy family. The Q10 is suggested as one of the new child dummies to be used in the revised EuroNCAP test protocol 2015 for both frontal and side impact tests. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensitivity of the Q10 to various countermeasures in side and frontal impacts. The side impact sled tests simulated a EuroNCAP AE-MDB test for a small vehicle. The door intruded the rear seat with a velocity of 7.5 m/s. The Q10 was positioned on a booster cushion (BC) with and without back and restrained by thorax side airbags (SAB) or inflatable curtains (IC). The frontal impact sled tests simulated a EuroNCAP offset test for a medium sized vehicle. The dummy was positioned on a BC with and without back and restrained by seat belts with and without pretensioner and load limiter. Different belt geometries were also tested. The Q10 was sensitive to the thorax side airbag, showing a reduction between 50-65% of chest deflection and 17-25% of pubic loading. The inflatable curtain showed no benefit. Using only the BC with back (no SAB) showed no benefit in reducing the risk of chest injuries. However, it reduced pubic loading by 18%. The lack of shoulder load measurement is a major drawback since the shoulder is a potential and important loading pathway in lateral loading. In frontal impacts, belt pretensioning reduced acceleration to the head, thorax and pelvis between 13-27%, but had a marginal effect on chest deflection. Combined load limiter and pretensioner further reduced head and thorax acceleration. Neck tension was reduced by half and chest deflection was reduced up to 37%, as compared to a standard seat belt. However, chest deflection was more sensitive to belt geometry than to any other countermeasures. With the shoulder belt starting at a mid-shoulder position, it travelled towards the neck during the crash, resulting in low chest deflection. However, if the shoulder belt's starting position was 20 mm further out on the shoulder as compared to a midshoulder position, the chest deflection response increased by 50% compared to the mid-shoulder routing. The Q10 showed sensitivity to various countermeasures in side- and frontal sled tests, although belt routing was found to be the most important parameter affecting chest deflection in frontal impacts. It is not clear if sensitivity to belt geometry, in terms of chest deflection, reflects real-life conditions.
