Cast iron water pipe, probably in use in Europe since the late 15th Century, was traditionally buried without any additional protection other than a bitumen coating. The introduction of the thinner-walled ductile iron pipe in the 1950's in the USA and the 1970's in Australasia prompted the water industry to re-think external corrosion protection and the use of loose polyethylene sleeving (LPS) became standard in Australia after 1976, based on successful earlier trials with cast iron pipe a decade earlier. This paper reviews the effectiveness of LPS from its inception in the early 1950's to the present day. The development of the sleeving over time is discussed, as well as the controversy over the effectiveness of LPS given reported failures in North America and elsewhere. Alternative external corrosion protection systems for ductile iron cement lined (DICL) pipe are discussed, including cathodic protection and factory applied zinc metal spray. Some laboratory test data on zinc metal spray corrosion performance in some Australian soils is presented and the effectiveness discussed. It is concluded that LPS sleeving still provides the most cost effective external corrosion protection system for DICL based on current Australian experience, provided it is installed correctly. Whilst zinc or zinc alloy metal spray has some success in Europe, there is no long-term local experience in different Australasian soils and conditions to justify its use as a sole alternative to LPS, although it may be a useful adjunct. Cathodic Protection (CP), is not a viable option on either bare or sleeved pipe, given the essential disbonded nature of LPS and should not be considered.
