It has been shown in this paper that the polyurethane fibre spray process is a promising production method for lightweight construction applications and is also suitable for economical manufacture of small quantities. Regarding methodologies, it succeeded in simulating the behaviour of polyurethane sandwich structures under structural load conditions. Based on the structure of this know-how, concepts for new demonstrator geometry could be calculated and eventually implemented in an entire real component. The overall project objects of the "PURTrain" project were the fulfilment of the defined requirements in the specification as well as the proof of weight and cost reduction of the demonstrator component. The goal here was a weight reduction of the reference structure by at least 20 % and a reduction in price of approx. 30%. With regard to the cost and weight specifications, both objectives were completely fulfilled. Depending on the chosen core material and the implemented grammage of the sandwich components, weight reductions of 30% are possible for this type of structure.
