The present study aimed at investigating wheel rotatory drag by means of measurements on a wheel model without contact to the ground. The respective and combined effects of four parameters were presented and discussed: ground effect, brake disc and wheel cover, wheel house and inflow. Consistent results were obtained between the different flow configurations, leading to the following main conclusion: in order to reduce rotatory drag, the mass flow in the neighborhood of the rim has to be kept minimal. The lowest results were achieved by mounting a wheel cover and carrying out measurements without inflow. In a general manner, inflow increases the rotatory drag. Surprisingly the brake disc showed different effects with and without inflow.
