The development, system analysis, and optimization of technical products are increasingly supported by virtual prototyping and simulations. A standard tool for modelling the dynamical behaviour of mechanical systems is the method of elastic multibody systems. Typical fields of applications range from the simulation of a drive train of vehicles, exhaust pipes, robot-arms, windmills or complete car bodies to noise vibration harshness analyses in automotive engineering. The elasticity of the bodies is usually modelled with a finite-element approach. In industrial practice, the FE modelling of different components leads to very large models in the sense of very high dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations. To enable the simulation process within the framework of EMBS, the large number of elastic degrees of freedom has to be reduced. In this contribution, model order reduction techniques for linear systems based on Krylov subspaces or Gramian matrices are described and compared to well-established methods like modal truncation and component mode synthesis. The advantages and challenges of these techniques are analysed for different numerical examples from automotive engineering applications with millions of degrees of freedom. The main calculation step during model order reduction is very memory consuming and requires the usage of high performance computers or modern numerical libraries. Meeting these requirements, the model reduction software Morembs enables the application of classical and modern reduction methods for large-scale systems, as they appear in industrial practice, without advanced knowledge about model order reduction. Recent projects with industrial partners, as well as projects in cooperation with the 'Forschungsvereinigung Verbrennungskraftmaschinen e.V.' (FVV) and the 'Automotive Simulation Center Stuttgart' (ASCS) have shown the great importance and potential of the topic.
