To examine the effect of suspension seats in Light Commercial Vehicles a set of measurements were taken on the road and performed in the laboratory. 5 Vehicles like Mercedes Sprinter, Fiat Ducato, IVECO Daily and others were driven on different road segments - from motorway to urban areas - and the vibration had been measured at the seat base and under the driver's buttocks. The signals from the seat base were used to create 3 different drive signals for laboratory tests in the z-axis. The high quantity of single road segments, measured with different vehicles, was reduced. In the first step an average signal over each road segment was created by joining the vehicle specific signal into one single data file. These joined signals were divided into 3 categories, low, medium and high, and the signals from one category were joined again as previously described. The laboratory signal for each category was created out of measured road segments, whereby the frequency content, the unweighted rms and the practical signal length of 300s were taken into account. Horizontal excitations were set aside, because the horizontal vibrations were determined to be quite low compared to the vertical axis. These 3 drive signals were used to compare the transmissibility of static and suspended serial production seats. (Seats with manual adjustable mechanical suspensions are installed today in this vehicle segment on the driver side in a quantity between 0% and 50% of all vehicles). The vertical vibration is reduced by the seat suspension between 5% and 20%. The field measurements were repeated with one vehicle equipped with a suspension seat and the vibration reduction was almost in the same range as in the laboratory. Laboratory measurements had also been performed with an air suspension seat, using the same 3 signal categories as before. The reduction of the vertical vibration was further reduced between 10% and 20% compared to the mechanical suspension, whereby the suspension stroke was increased up to 30 %.
