The ever increasing complexity of automotive electronic control systems requires appropriate methods for system design, validation and verification. Further, the ongoing trend to replace mechanical and hydraulic systems in vehicles by electronic components increases the demands for definition and validation of functional safety requirements for these components, like brake-by-wire applications. The norm ISO 26262 "Road vehicles - Functional safety" , released in 2011 defines, among others, functional safety aspects of the entire development process and provides requirements for validation and confirmation measures. On the one hand, steadily increasing system complexity and safety requirements raise the need for regulations and standards for the development process of safety-relevant systems. On the other hand, development time is costly and the automotive industry operates in a very competitive market, where products are released in large quantities, and car manufacturers and suppliers are very ambitious to keep the costs per piece as low as possible. A reasonable way to maintain product quality and safety at affordable costs is to support the system development process with appropriate methods and tools. This paper presents a verification and validation process that shall help to cope with the challenges of vehicle control system development. The proposed process involves the generation and execution of simulation models from system descriptions, automatic test case generation, requirements management and the validation of system requirements from simulation results. Such a process supports the overall development process including documentation and test and is a valuable help in the verification and validation phase and during the preparation procedure of a safety case.
