The benefits of transmission technology in hybrid and electric vehicles are shown in this article based on an analytical 1:1 comparison of powertrain configurations. Based on the data shown, a 10 % increase of electric range can be realized by improved transmission technology in the powertrain with still the same battery capacity. However, since volumes are small and development cost are extremely high, the new energy vehicles will suffer unless governmental programs will push the electric vehicle growth rate with incentives. Another potential game changer can be the oil price: a sudden rise can be driven by a political turmoil in the middle east at any time. Higher fuel cost will reduce the break even period for private customers and could speed up the electrification process. Same holds for the battery technology: A break-trough in energy storage could accelerate the growth rate as well when high-capacity low-cost battery technology becomes available. With even more concepts than shown under development, Schaeffler is well prepared for upcoming challenges in eMobility. The authors are convinced, that their products ranging from component to propulsion systems offer unique benefits in performance, efficiency and light weight technology for electrically driven transportation. With the modular approaches shown, technically and commercially attractive solutions become realistic ranging over several vehicles segments but utilizing common components. Of course, more attempts with regard to standardization - also looking for partnerships - will be required to cut down cost for the end customer to make electric mobility more attractive. Without economy of scale effects pushing down cost, the desire of the governments for more climate friendly transportation will remain a vision.
