The demand-actuated design of the developed electro mechanic clutch suits to modern automotive transmission and drive train systems by avoiding the use of lossy hydraulics for actuation. Especially with regard to emobility applications, double conversion of energy (battery → pump drive → hydraulic pump) must be avoided to not reduce the range, caused by limited battery capacity, even more. The presented electro mechanic clutch system allows variable rise and decay times when applying axial load levels which are also variable. Additionally it offers the possibility to adapt the load of the clutch while the clutch is closed - e.g. to increase or decrease the reliability against slipping. As the electro mechanic clutch is solely being actuated by electric components (electric motor with integrated brake) the shifting process easily being adjusted to the respective application via changes within the software. The results achieved on the test rig prove the systems reliability and reproducibility required for application in a modern transmission system. The spreading ball ramp mechanism allows an even pressure over the entire circumference like a hydraulically actuated clutch which results in a high friction coefficient. Thereby the behavior of the clutch system is as expected similar to its hydraulic counterpart with considerably lower energy consumption. To engage the clutch for transmission of up to more than 300 Nm only 75 Ws are necessary. Common transmission oil pumps consume in best-case scenario (8 bar - 10,5 cSt) at 1500 rpm permanently 400 Watts. The integrated torque sensor allows control of clutch torque by using the realtime measured torque signal as control variable. Therfore a clutch can be used to realize start-up procedures whereby an additional start-up element can be avoided and cost can be saved if the transmission is applicated in combination with a combustion engine.
