In this paper, a synthesis procedure for the prediction of vehicle pass-by noise is presented that employs steady-state source-receiver transfer functions from multiple point sources inside the vehicle and for a number of fixed vehicle positions. The vehicle movement is incorporated through a travel time correction algorithm and interpolation of the received pressure fragments on a distorted time base for which oversampling is required. Results show that the Doppler correction is accurately predicted and that the travel time correction and the oversampling are essential for accurate prediction of the sound pressure level and third-octave band SPL (Sound Pressure Level). For the prediction of pass-by noise SPL and third-octave band SPL, the Fast Multipole Boundary Element Method may be employed to evaluate the source-receiver transfer functions up to the 2 kHz third-octave band with sufficient accuracy and within a computation time of 22 hours on a modern multi-core computer and with the modeling guidelines drawn up in literatue. Results show that the maximum frequency of 2.2 kHz is sufficient to predict the overall pass-by noise SPL caused by the exhaust, intake and tires. This study has shown that the prediction of pass-by noise SPL of automotive vehicles is feasible through the employment of the presented synthesis procedure and the employment of the FMBEM. The described method allows for accurate predictions early in the vehicle design process, as it can be based on CAD/CAE models of the vehicle and it is not necessarily dependent on the availability of a physical prototype.
