In the past, requirements on automobile safety assessment for type-approval and consumer tests (e.g. ECE, Euro NCAP) and corresponding developments by OEMs were mainly focused on car passenger's safety. Protection of pedestrians and cyclists was only a secondary task that's why a large number of fatal pedestrian accidents occurred within the last decades. In our days lawmakers, consumer protection and OEMs now focus on the protection of unmotorized traffic participants to decrease the number of accidents and lower the injury severity. But this change in mind has just begun and the achieved results are not adequate yet. Therefore there is a need to develop the vehicle safety assessments towards pedestrian and cyclist protection and use the strength of design methodology to implement them in prospective car concepts. Obviously all factions, legislators, manufacturers and consumer protection are on their way to increase the safety for unprotected traffic participants within the limit of their resources. But this progress still lacks in some aspects, e.g. considering new car concepts due to new drive systems. Pedestrian and cyclist safety is still integrated into the car at a late phase of the development process. There most parameters are already fixed and the possibility to introduce new safety concepts is limited. Also it becomes clear, that there are still a lot of constructional, technical and administrative ways for reaching a higher level of road safety. Vehicle-sided a better coordination of active and passive safety systems could occur for raising their effect. Thence, the sound use of design methodology for developing future car concepts is a promising approach to regard safety aspects from the very early phases and consistently follow them up to the completed vehicle concept.
