A compact magnetorheological (MR) clutch which is capable to transmit a torque of ca. 500 Nm is presented in this paper. To achieve a large torque-transmitting surface, the clutch with a disc-shape design was equipped with six active MR fluid gaps. The MR clutch was manufactured, assembled and investigated on a rotational test rig. Used in a brake-like operation, the torque required to shear the MR fluid was measured in dependence on the applied coil current at different rotation speeds of the electric drive. The experiments were conducted with MR fluids containing different concentrations of iron particles (35 vol%, 45 vol%, 50 vol%). In order to investigate the long-term behaviour, the MR fluids were sheared in the clutch over 10 hours. Finally, measurements of the temporal torque increase upon a stepwise enhancement of the coil current were performed.
