Driving a private vehicle represents nowadays one of the most viable ways by which disabled drivers can maintain their mobility and transport conditions. To do so it is necessary to adapt a vehicle to the user's residual capabilities. Nevertheless the technical aids installed in the vehicles must fulfill the same safety requirements as standard vehicles. This paper shows the results of a research project held at the Automobile Laboratory of the Technical University of Valencia (Spain), the main objective being to generate basic design criteria for improving the passive safety behaviour of the adapted vehicle under different impact conditions. Tests were performed on a decelerator platform (sled) that reproduces the impact conditions specified in Regulation ECE R94 for passenger protection in frontal collision (a deceleration pulse of 25 g at 48 km/h). This work upgrades previous works (Dalrymple, 1996; Pilkey et al., 1996, 1998 and the Forum of Mobility Centres, 2005a, b) and analyses the use of new restraint systems, including the occupant's safety belt, the front airbag mounted on the steering-wheel and the airbag for the knees, located at the bottom of the dashboard. The tested devices include a concentric gas ring mounted on the steering-wheel, a combined gas and brake lever system located below the steering-column and different adaptation devices mounted on the steering-wheel (simple knobs, three-pin knobs and IR remote controls).
