Compared to standard current solutions, typically polypropylene injected structural undertray (used for aerodynamic mainly) combined with additional insulator sheets for acoustics (thermoformed PP/PE membranes, glass fiber felts, polyester felts, resonant membranes, etc.), double wall polypropylene/glass fibers (Sommold) undertray allows to obtain better broader NVH performance while having lighter stiff single parts. The main advantages are weight reduction compared to standard solution (up to 40%) and a huge broadband absorption gain in a single part (no need of any additional absorber). Associating tuned absorbing porous membranes backed by internal air cavities and tunable absorption uncompressed areas working as a bi-permable concept with its controlled Air Flow Resistance (AFR) non-woven, this device is a true inhomogeneous broadband absorber drastically more efficient than current solutions with good mechanical double wall properties. This paper presents this new product, from its design to its experimental validation through main absorption results obtained in small reverberant room and a first set of results on vehicle measured on a chassy dynamometer.
