Currently, the research vehicle SpeedE is being developed at the Institute for Automotive Engineering of RWTH Aachen University (ika). Besides many further innovations, one of the main objectives of the project is to deploy a Steer-by-Wire system. A distinctive feature of the development is the wheel individual control of the steering angle by actuators that are integrated into the double wishbone suspension. One of the main challenges is to ensure a high functional safety of the system. To reach this goal, previous proposals to realize Steer-by-Wire systems deploy redundancies of components and network architectures leading to severe disadvantages such as high weight, high required package space and high costs. An alternative approach is utilization of degraded operating states, which presently are used in vehicle subsystems only, such as drive train emergency programs. For the safety concept development of SpeedE, this approach is adopted across subsystem boundaries thus reducing the number of necessary redundancies. In order to determine the potentials and limitations of different fall back states during the virtual development phase, a simulation environment is set up to assess the lateral dynamics impact of certain actuator failures. Simultaneously, the potential contribution of these actuators to vehicle stability can be identified. Simulation results are demonstrated and discussed and finally the fulfillment of particular safety goals are illustrated.
