In the present work the relevance of modern steering systems and particularly their electromechanical components for the overall vehicle acoustics was presented. Different approaches have been introduced from the field of the motor physics, the motor control, and the structural mechanics in order to reduce the acoustic emission from steering systems. With the measures shown it is possible to reduce the noise level clearly and thus to comply with the quality expectations and the requirements for the motor performance in parallel. This conflict will increase in the future, since the environment of steering systems is subjected to strong changes, which means at least a challenge for the goal to achieve a gentle acoustic behavior. In this context the cooperation between the car manufacturers and the supplier gains more importance. The share of responsibilities and the common target oriented development represent the fundament to face the above mentioned challenges. Particularly the formulation of specifications is of interest. The definition of concretely quantified targets on component level supports the attainment of the vehicle NVH targets and thus allows an efficient development. Hence there will also be no feedback-less systems in the future the acceptance of a certain acoustic feedback is a part of the NVH development. As demonstrated in this work, not necessarily the noise volume alone is crucial for the evaluation of the sound quality. It is rather relevant to get rid of the disturbing character of the noise. Here acoustic sources can possibly even be used, instead of eliminating them. Steering systems can profit in the future in a sense of an increased functionality from exploiting these effects and an integrated sound-engineering process.
