The paper examines verifications of a proposed technique for the detection of signs before the wheelclimb derailment for a railway vehicle. The new system detects abnormal vehicle signs before the derailment using MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) acceleration sensors of automobiles has been proposed due to dynamic simulations and experiments of a 1/10 scale model. Vehicle state variables are measured by sensors mounted on the vehicle, and this system detects abnormal states before derailment using real-tune data measured and an detecting algorithm for distinguishing derailment or not. If the roll and the pitch angular rates considered as a detection algorithm exceed given threshold levels, the proposed system determines that the vehicle is in an abnormal state before the derailment, and sends an alarm to the drivers cab. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is confirmed that the signs of the wheelclimb derailment could be detected in the early stage summarizing results of the simulation and experiment in the 1/10 scale model, and then, it is verified according to dynamic simulations in the real scale. A vehicle model of a real-size commuter train is modeled by using the multi-body dynamic simulation and used for dynamic simulation of wheelclimb derailment in the next step. With the realsize simulation model, the derailment is examined in four wheelclimb conditions. As a result, the effectiveness of the proposed derailment detection system in a real-scale is estimated according to the results of derailment simulation.
