While shipbuilding has traditionally not seen a significant requirement for extra high strength thermo-mechanically processed steel, there are a growing number of instances of its use. One particular situation in the UK has required the use of TMCP steel in place of conventionally processed plate. The flight deck and hanger deck of an aircraft carrier were initially designed using EH36. However, following a number of design and other specific requirement changes there was a need to use a higher strength steel plate and reduce upper deck weight. Through a number of iterations the design was modified to use EH46 steel plate in a variety of thicknesses. From a steel supplier point of view this required a re-design of steel chemistry and the adoption of a TMCP process route. From a series of trials incorporating variations in rolling schedules, the specified minimum mechanical property requirements were met. However, as the welding processes to be employed in the build programme incorporated a significant proportion of high heat input submerged arc welding; an enhancement was made to improve plate toughness further. This resulted in a reduced sulphur, calcium treated, TMCP steel which boosted plate toughness by an additional 100J. The steel developed was able to satisfy the thicker parent plate mechanical properties and also the requirements of the weld heat affected zone properties. Data is presented from a number of welding processes which shows that through the correct consumable selection, the required properties can be met. Results are provided from routine mechanical property measurements and fracture toughness determinations carried out on the welded material, which revealed 'pop in' fracture face characteristics.
