A study was conducted to envision an alternative solution to electrochemical batteries for hybrid cars. A "mechanical battery" is made of a small steel flywheel with an electric machine, in order to store some few tens of kilojoules only, sufficient for fuel optimization of the hybrid car, and low enough not to face hard gyroscopic issues. Such a device may be mounted into hybrid cars at the traditional location of the twelve volts battery, and interfaced by a three phase inverter to the electric power DC bus of the car.
