A large matrix of numerical simulations is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of tilting seat cushion angles and the seat cushion support on occupant protection in various reclining positions on the LS-DYNA platform. An FTSS HIII 5th FE dummy model is modified to enable a large degree of freedom in rotation about the hip joint, for reclining purposes. The responses of the modified dummy model are then compared with those of a standard dummy model to observe the difference, which demonstrates that the modified HIII FE dummy model is more human-like than the standard dummy model, and can be used for the safety analysis of reclining seats. The numerical study with the modified dummy model shows that a larger seat back angle leads to a larger pelvis rearward rotation and thus, higher submarining risk. In addition, a larger seat cushion angle leads to greater seat cushion deformation, a larger H-point component Hv, and higher submarining tendency. Adding appropriate seat cushion support can reduce the H-point component Hv, thus lowering submarining risk.
