The interaction of driveline lubricants with a lot of components in engine, gearbox and axle demands an optimization of lubricants regarding fuel efficiency as reducing fuel consumption remains one of the main targets in automotive development. In this paper an overview about fluid development aspects and targets is given. Viscosity reduction helps in reaching the target of improved fuel efficiency. On the other side, fuel efficiency may be linked with friction losses for driveline lubricants as with increasing sliding speed, the oil film thickness increases and metal surface start to separate with decreased friction. Therefore it is necessary to apply successful strategies in reducing friction while protecting metal surface from damage and wear. On the other side, viscosity reduction reduces oil film thickness. It is therefore obvious, that surface protecting components must be considered when improving fuel efficiency by viscosity reduction of the lubricants. Lubricant design and optimization of mechanical efficiency and volumetric efficiency as key elements is outlined in the paper.
