A substantial part to meet CO2 emission requirements can be achieved by hybrid systems and the use of pure electric traction. Electric drives have to fulfil new demands. An integrated design based on a high-speed approach and on asynchronous electric motor (ASM) technology shows advantages. A corresponding solution is presented. With the Electric Vehicle Drive 1 (EVD1) by ZF it can be shown that a high-speed asynchronous electric motor is a very economic and feasible solution for an electric city car drive. The concept shows big advantages on the field of efficiency, weight (and therefore cost) and acoustic behavior. The conceptual considerations that led into this direction could be proven on the test bench as well as in a demonstrator vehicle.
