The analysis of a set of in-depth accident cases involving PTWs (Powered two-wheeler) has indicated the potential benefits of the active braking safety function. In the present study the activation of the braking system without input from the rider took place in the case of unavoidable collisions. In the car-following scenario the collision was considered unavoidable when neither the braking nor the swerving manoeuvre led to the complete crash avoidance. Both manoeuvres were schematized using simplified physical models designed to overestimate the real avoidance possibilities of the PTW to avoid false triggering. The tests conducted on a PTW equipped with a prototype AB (Active Braking) system showed the feasibility of the AB as an impact mitigation strategy of unavoidable collisions in a straight line. The AB was tolerated by the riders both when properly activated and in the case of false triggering. The experimental study focused on low speeds where the swerve manoeuvre was less effective than braking as an emergency manoeuvre. Further research is recommended to validate the proposed methodology and to identify the minimum swerving distance linked with the inhibition of the AB at higher speeds. Tests should be performed to assess whether a generic rider is able to avoid a fixed or moving obstacle at a shorter distance from the obstacle compared with the computed minimum swerving distance. In a future experimental study the influence of the obstacle width on the minimum swerving distance should be investigated as well.
