As all usual machine topologies for hybrid (HEV) and electrical vehicles (EV) are well understood and published in many conference papers a closer look into some unusual topologies may be helpful for the development and completion of a design strategy for EV and HEV. In this contribution we present three examples e.g. highlighting the design of a stator-fixed hybrid excitation or the force density or a passive rotor concept with controllable stator excitation. The special features of these machines are studied and compared with the conventional ones.
