The history and present of application of stainless steel for passenger railcars are reviewed. Passenger railcar bodies can be constructed from three families of materials: carbon and high strength steels, aluminium alloys, and stainless steels. Their selection is based on the following factors: fabrication and life cycle costs, weight, corrosion resistance, aesthetics, maintainability, and compatibility with rolling stock. The application of stainless steels for passenger railcars is associated with a fascinating history, the development of high strength materials, original fabrication technologies, distinctive look, and product longevity. This area represents a unique example of the successful and systematic structural application of high-strength stainless steels, which extends for almost eighty years.
