This paper contributes to theory and practice of energy efficiency and cost controlling (EECC). First, a controlling approach is introduced consisting of a framework in terms of a nonagon, a controlling cycle and controlling guidelines. Second, starting from the existing non-energy-related controlling methodology a pool of partly novel methods of EECC is presented: instruments for the determination and analysis of energy consumption, energy cost accounting (incl. flow cost accounting), energyoriented life cycle costing, performance measurement and target costing. Together, they constitute a toolbox that should help to successfully implement an EECC for powertrain components' manufacturing as well as other use cases. However, both the concept and methods need further development to reach the stage of being an useful and established aid of management.
