Within the advanced chassis engineering (ACE) projects developments, the basis of the virtual chassis validation has been founded. The approach is able to extend the conventional digital mock up (DMU) clearance validation with further geometric relevant effects in the early design phases. This leads to a significant improvement of the predictive simulation accuracy. Clearance investigations, which are usually performed within the CAD environment, can benefit from being coupled to the core simulation discipline modules. Depending on the actual investigation, the chassis designer can customize the simulation modules. Therefore, it is possible to have the right complexity for the clearance validation under investigation. Scripting functionalities lead to quick and comfortable exchange of data between the individual simulation tools. If the simulation of an effect does not fulfill the requirements, hardware testing can also be implemented in this modular description. Fundamental for the success of this approach is the knowledge as well as the willingness of the CA-specialist to interact with the different disciplines. Interface partners have to have the awareness that a more precise simulation doesn't automatically lead to a smaller space requirement. However, unnecessary safety margins can be decreased effectively. In the early development phase of chassis design, this can make an important contribution to increase the maturity of the concept. As a result the number of cost-intensive iteration loops, particularly at the later design phases, can be minimized.
