This paper deals with the comparison of two electrical machines (EMs) based on the transverse flux principle. Part I presents the derivation of the requirements on an utility vehicle (UV). Due to the large diameter of the wheels and the low top speed of the UV, wheel hub motors seem to be suitable for use in electrical transporters (ETs). The main challenge of this concept is the very high torque requirement which is needed to accelerate the ET in a desired time. To achieve this high torque density without a gear unit, in part II the applicability of transverse flux machines (TFMs) to UVs is shown. Two TFMs, a transverse flux permanent magnet excited machine (TFPM) and a transverse flux reluctance machine (TFRM), have been designed for use in an UV with a top speed of about 100 km·h-1 . The results show that the designed TFPM meets the necessary torque requirements. However, the results of the TFRM show that the achievable torque density is about four times lower and not sufficient for a wheel hub motor as direct drive in a UV. This, however, does not exclude further applications of the TFRM in other fields.
