Starting in 1999, Mercedes-Benz has offered driver assistance systems that use forward looking radar sensors to support the driver in the longitudinal dimension of the driving task. Over the years functions were added and enhanced . Safety features like the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) have always been a part of the convenience system DISTRONIC/DISTRONIC PLUS. With the latest generation the lower activation threshold was moved from 30 to 7 kph for the systems BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE Brake. This includes autonomous braking activations that can avoid rear-end collisions at velocities below 30 kph. The Mercedes-Benz concept of longitudinal assistance is described and data from experiments in the simulator, an the test track and in the real world are presented to asses the effectiveness of the different functions.
