The 24 GHz narrowband radar technology enables a cost optimised design for the described up-to-date functions and shows enough potential for future application demands. Consequent re-use of standard components, common SW- and HW architectures and development processes can strengthen this advantage, especially in case of scaleable sensor derivates for different function bundles. Furthermore MMIC technology is available for the 24 GHz frequency band. Also the positive radio frequency regulation situation, right from the beginning of the development, supports the roll-out of this radar technology. It can be clearly demonstrated, that the narrowband 24 GHz radar technology matches to the demands of the mid-range applications and the radar principle show sufficient detection performance. This includes also the object separation performance, determined by the used radar basics. The UWB technology is especially focused an near-range applications (< 30 m) with high measurement accuracy. The gap in costs between the 77/79 GHz and 24 GHz will be getting smaller in future, but will still remain. The cost factor is still significant when reaching high volume car lines. The positive sales of 24 GHz radar today will enhance further cost reductions in the future. The invisible vehicle integration (mounting behind vehicle parts), robust again tolerances, is easier for 24 GHz than for higher frequencies. The current experience shows that it would be negligent to underestimate all the integration and mounting aspects. 24 GHz radar sensor systems from Hella are sold since 2006, meanwhile more than 1700000 sensor units are worldwide in the Field, most of them for LC and BSD. This results in accumulated know-how with deep analytic experience concerning different bumper materials, coatings and finishes as well as the effects of all integration tolerances.
