One basic requirement for conventional cable-based (i.e. conductive) charging systems for electric vehicles is the optimal connection to the charging station. The connector assembly as well as the operation of the charging station itself should be simple enough for all customers to operate them. Thus, an optimal combination of connector and cable assembly should be available which assures a robust and safe charging system under all weather conditions on the one hand while being comfortable to operate and easy to maintain on the other. Constantly plugging and unplugging an electric vehicle after parking is tedious and can be messy - depending on the weather conditions - due to external agents like snow, ice, rain etc. The contactless battery charging system presented in this paper is devoid of the plugging/unplugging process on the customer's part. Instead, the energy transfer happens contactlessly via a transfer unit located under the vehicles underbody. To produce a commercially ready system compliant with all well-established automotive standards, further ICT-integration as well as the meeting of additional challenges on the automation front is required.
