Recently, automotive companies have invested in vehicle weight reduction and clean car development because of rising of price and environmental concerns. Hotstamping, hydroforming and tailor welded blanks technologies have been adopted to reduce vehicle weight through reduction in body and chassis weight. This paper deals with technology combining indirect hotstamping and tailor welded blanks for side outer panels of luxury cars. Tailor welded blanks technology involves joining several blanks through laser welding before forming processes, thereby combining several conventional forming processes into one. Also, it can join several materials with different strength and thickness during laser welding which makes strengthen specific area to improve crash performance and rearrange whole part weight. Hotstamping technology can also be used to produce ultra-high strength parts through a process of heating and press quenching. In particular, indirect hotstamping has better degree of freedom regarding part design and reduces laser cutting cost. This combined technology provides the benefits of two weight reduction technologies. Four blanks were joined using a laser welder and formed by pressing at room temperature. Next, formed blanks were heated to 950 °C in a furnace. And it formed and quenched in the hotstamping die. During hotstamping, part temperature quickly dropped from 800 °C to close to room temperature. This transformed the blanks into martensite and increased strength by 1.5GPa. Using this combined technology, part weight was reduced by approximately 10% and crash performance was equal to initial car design.
