This study focuses on the prediction of the tire/snow interaction using numerical simulation. Mechanical properties of compacted snow roads are estimated from laboratory experiments. They are used to parameterize a numerical snow model. Using an explicit finite element method, the tire is treated within a Lagrangian, snow within an Eulerian framework to solve the complex interaction with large deformations. The mechanism of tire traction on snow can be described by force factors at the scale of a tire tread pattern. Force factors comprise edge effect, surface friction and shear force of snow in the void. The proposed numerical snow model is used to predict the force factors and shows good qualitative agreement with tire traction tests on a compacted snow road. Since the shear stress of snow in the contact patch could be predicted, we could evaluate tire performance in advance of field experiments and could develop a new tire in a short period.
