A new durable polymer coating was developed to attend the requirements of modern engines. Applied to a premium aluminium based bearing lining, it showed: (1) lower friction properties; (2) good performance in boundary lubrication, with significantly lower wear than uncoated bearings in rig testing and in engine stop-start conditions; and (3) higher fatigue strength than the uncoated material. This new technology therefore demonstrated its suitability for connecting rod and crankshaft bearings in demanding gasoline engine applications such as flex-fuel, stop-start and hybrid systems.
