In contrast to on-highway applications the lot numbers of typical off-highway exhaust systems are much lower while the application effort is practically the same. Regarding the development and production costs it is reasonable to design modular systems that have an unlimited function and are robust despite different installation geometries in different applications. A modular SCR Selective Catalytic Reduction) system for off-highway-applications is presented. Robust metal substrate catalysts are used along with an Emitec NoNOx airless urea dosing system developed for rough off-highway purpose. The SCR system can be both used for inline and V-type engines. The system is scalable to different engine power ratings for a wide range of non-road applications as well. This covers the broad range from mobile working machines to marine applications. This is secured by using a two module design. Besides the dosing module for releasing ammonia using the airless dosing system a SCR module consisting of SCR (+ASC(Ammonia Slip Catalysts)). The dosing module includes as main part a hydrolysis catalyst that is used as defined spray target to get an even and non depositing release of ammonia in the exhaust line. The used structured hydrolysis catalyst guarantees a practically complete evaporation of the urea solution. This allows to chose a practically arbitrary piping between the two modules without the risk of deposit formation. There is a clear functional separation between the mixing and evaporation function within the system. The SCR module provides the opportunity to use different inflow and outflow geometries (radial and/or axial). These degrees of freedom in combination with the dosing and SCR module allow to cover a broad application range with one universal system that promises a maximum of stability and robustness. Both modules were developed using a graph-based design language developed at DIF(Die Ideen Fabrik GmbH). This innovative and advantageous development method leads very fast to a virtual prototype of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The increased speed in model preparation gives the opportunity to analyze and evaluate a considerably broader variety of possible system designs. This leads to a more efficient and better validated final product design compared to the conventional development paradigm.
