Following the vision of "virtual prototyping" consequently means driving decision processes based on simulation results. In powertrain development some decisions, having a large influence on the engine's performance, fuel consumptions and emissions have to be taken very early. Therefore conceptual layout capabilities are essential to choose the right engine dimensions from the beginning. When refining the design, it becomes more and more important to take design details into consideration when running simulations. Even manufacturing processes may have significant influences on the behaviour of components and their interaction. Before releasing the first prototype design, it must be ensured through CAE that on one hand failure risk is minimized but on the other hand, that the design is well dimensioned without leaving unnecessary margins, that would cost money, time, weight and - for moving components - fuel consumption and CO2-Emission. This important project milestone is often called "Virtual Release" and requires high sophisticated CAE tools. With the Virtual Release, CAE engineer's job is not done. Supporting the physical prototype development is an additional requirement for virtual prototyping. This phase requires large flexibility regarding local model refinement and sub-modelling techniques to investigate any kind of effect found in the testing of the physical prototype. Doing all this CAE work with large quality standards a common data model for all kinds of previously mentioned analyses is necessary. FEV established dynamic simulation procedures based on a modular common data model, which ensures the applicability of the product in all development phases. This paper shows typical application examples in powertrain development.
